Art and Art Reproduction – Some Quick Facts - By: Arthur Kimmelman It is almost impossible to define art but we can explain art as the deliberate use of some medium to communicate emotions or ideas between minds. The various forms of art such as paintings, music, dance, sculpture or any form are the artists’ exclusive ways of communicating through their creativity and imagination. The criterion of a good work of art lies in its ability to communicate the underlying idea, thought or feeling effectively. Great artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, and Michelangelo have created immortal works of art that are not only breathtakingly beautiful but enhance a sense of aesthetics in the viewer as well. They are known for their dazzling creative ability and inimitable genius. However, not everyone gets a chance to see their masterpieces. Therefore, the need for art reproductions was felt. Art reproductions are an effort to replicate the brilliant artwork, without taking away the original artist’s imagination which remains his/her intellectual property. Art reproductions are an effort to make great artworks accessible to a wider audience and to preserve them for posterity. |
What's an Original Print? - The Print Council of America issued a guide establishing a criteria for an original print: 1. The artist alone must create the master image on stone, or whatever material is used to make the print. 2. The print - if not printed by the artist - should be hand printed by someone under the artist's direct supervision. 3. Each impression should be approved and signed by the artist and the master image (the matrix) destroyed or cancelled. The original print is not a copy of anything else, not a copy of a painting or another print. If an artist chooses to copy his own work, originally done in another medium, it would be a print done after an oil (or other medium). An original print is a creative endeavor by the artist and, therefore, is as valid an expression as is any other form of visual art - whether it be a painting or a sculpture. The original print is a work of art in its own right. Read more... |
