The Royal Academy of Arts presents the first major exhibition in Britain devoted to Lucas Cranach the Elder (c.1472–1553).
A collaboration between the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main and the Royal Academy, the exhibition brings together some 70 works chosen to represent the quality and range of this important master.
As the leading member of a German family of artists, Lucas Cranach was a painter, printmaker and book illustrator with a distinctly individual manner and a highly successful business. He was one of the most versatile artists of the Renaissance, court artist to the Saxon electors, a staunch supporter of the Reformation, and a close friend of Martin Luther. De Kunsthal presenteert met ‘Thuis in de Gouden Eeuw’ een nieuwe kijk op de zeventiende-eeuwse schilderkunst. Meer dan 150 schilderijen uit de omvangrijke collectie SØR Rusche laten zien dat het zeventiende-eeuwse kunstbedrijf een enorme productie kende. Alle soorten schilderkunst uit de Gouden Eeuw komen aan bod: portretten, landschappen, stillevens, historiestukken en genrestukken.  The Signs Pile Up: Paintings by Pedro Alvarez is the first comprehensive exhibition in the U.S. on the artist and his work. Pedro Alvarez (1967-2004) was one of the leading artists who established themselves in Cuba during the 1990s, a period of time that has been called the Special Period, or Periodo Especial, a time of economic crisis after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Alvarez utilized collage and appropriation in his evocative, large-scale paintings as a postmodern technique for examining cultural identity. He often juxtaposed different time periods from Cuba, along with references to U.S. popular culture from the 50s to the 90s. After moving to Spain, his interests broadened into explorations of transnationalism, among other topics. Much of the subject matter in the paintings deals with the cultural interchange between Cuba and the U.S., Afro-Cuban history, U.S. slavery, the effects of the legalization of the U.S. dollar in Cuba in the 90s, and the role of landscape painting within a highly charged socio-political context. | Consuming Passion: Fragonard's Allegories of Love

Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806) is associated with the lighthearted Rococo art of prerevolutionary France. It is often assumed that he fell out of favor as tastes shifted toward the more severe, Neoclassical art of the 1770s and 1780s. However, Fragonard created many marketable works during this time that reached a wide audience through engravings and prints.
This exhibition focuses on the most popular compositions of Fragonard's later career: a series of allegories on the theme of love. These share a riveting sense of drama, heightened contrasts of light and shadow, and a restricted palette redolent of nocturnal mystery—characteristics that indicate a new Romantic sensibility. Fragonard's intimate allegories are among the earliest and most eloquent expressions of a new vision of romantic love as an all-consuming experience of near-mystical communion—a vision that was worlds apart from the blithe, libertine spirit of the Rococo era. | Ai Weiwei - Groninger Museum - 2 maart tot en met 23 november 2008
Van 2 maart tot en met 23 november 2008 is in het Groninger Museum een solotentoonstelling te zien van Ai Weiwei. Ai Weiwei (1957) is een van de belangrijkste personen in de hedendaagse kunstwereld in China.
Recent was hij als adviseur betrokken bij het ontwerp van het Olympisch Stadion in Beijing. Deze solo-expositie wordt zijn debuut in het Groninger Museum.
Het werk van Ai Weiwei omvat performances, installaties en architectuur.
Vanaf 1978 manifesteerde Ai Weiwei zich in de kunstwereld van Beijing als lid van de kunstenaarsvereniging Xingxing (the Stars). Toen deze zich in 1983 ophief, vestigde hij zich in New York. In 1993 keerde hij terug naar Beijing en vanaf dat moment begon hij traditionele Chinese elementen in zijn werk te gebruiken waarmee hij het mechanisme van politieke en nationale symboliek op provocerende wijze verkent. Voor een van zijn werken liet hij een urn uit de
Han-dynastie op de grond kapot vallen. Ook andere objecten van nationale trots vielen bij wijze van statement uit zijn handen. Oude vazen beschilderde hij met het Coca- Cola logo, of ze werden in vrolijke kleuren geverfd.
Vervolgens presenteerde hij ze als goedkope vervalsingen. In 1997 richtte hij het
