| Art Auctions | | | Sotheby's - De Boelelaan 30 Amsterdam 1083 HJ Sotheby's Amsterdam is located in the heart of a prosperous business district in the southern part of Amsterdam. The premises, near the Amsterdam ring road, are only minutes away from Schiphol Airport. The area is well-served by ample parking facilities. Sotheby's opened its doors in 1974, in the city center of Amsterdam. In 1999, having just celebrated its 25th anniversary, the auction house moved to the present, newly-created building. Confirming Sotheby's prominent position in the Northern European auction world, the move has provided both the capacity and the facilities to take the company into the 21st century. With more than 5,000 square meters of space, the new location offers four large galleries for exhibitions and sales, not to mention lectures, symposia and concerts. Add to that a restaurant and comprehensive bookshop and the location becomes a state of the art auction centre. Among the most widely attended sales at Sotheby's Amsterdam are 19th-century European Paintings, Modern and Contemporary Art and Old Master Paintings and Drawings; important events on the international art market calendar. | Drouot.com - Tout sur les ventes aux enchères à Paris Drouot.com : Le portail des ventes aux enchères à Drouot. West, Artfact.com 11.07.07 - Forbes Magazine Young Chinese artists are selling their work for prices that would make Chairman Mao Zedong weep. Beijing-based Yue Minjun is one such artist. His politically charged works are commanding huge prices at auction. "Terracotta Warrior," a life-size sculpture, sold for $275,000 at Sotheby's in London in October, three times the expected price. The classic example of Minjun's work is not the most expensive ever sold, yet it perfectly highlights the strength in the market for his works. In September, a piece from the same series sold at auction in New York for $157,000. From an art-as-investment standpoint, that bodes quite well for future returns. Minjun grabbed international headlines earlier this year when Sotheby's sold a large scale work for £2,932,500 ($5.9 million). The painting, entitled "Execution" was bought in 1995 by Trevor Simon, a junior investment banker who saw it in a gallery while on business in Hong Kong. He is reported to have paid $32,000 the painting, which is based on the bloody events of Tiananmen Square in 1989. Its recent sale at Sotheby's is a world record for a contemporary Chinese work of art. | Contemporary Art China Avant-Garde: The Farber Collection Phillips de Pury & Company is pleased to present a historic collection of contemporary Chinese art....Auction Saturday 13 October 2007, 7pm | LONDON.-Christie’s announces the sale of Property from the Anton Philips Collection, which will be offered through a series of international auctions during 2007 and which is expected to realise in the region of £10 million / $20 million / €14 million. Dr. Anton Philips, one of the most prominent entrepreneurs of the 20th century and the co-founder of Royal Philips Electronics, assembled a collection of Old Master pictures, 19th and 20th century art, furniture and decorative arts, a selection of which will be offered at sales in London, New York and Amsterdam. The collection is highlighted by Two studies of a young man, an oil study by Sir Peter Paul Rubens (estimate: £4,000,000-6,000,000). Important Old Master Pictures from the Collection of Anton Philips - Anton Philip’s foremost passion was Old Master paintings and he owned a considerable private collection, an impressive selection of which will be offered at Christie’s evening auction of Important Old Master and British Pictures on 6 December 2007 in London. A comprehensive representation of predominantly 17th century Dutch and Flemish paintings, 17 pictures will be offered with a collective estimate in excess of £8 million. The highlight is Sir Peter Paul Rubens’ (1577-1640) Two studies of a young man which was painted between 1615 and 1617 and is expected to realise £4 to 6 million illustrated above. The panel (46.5 x 65.5 cm.) is a study for Melchior in The Adoration of the Magi at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and shows a Levantine head, pictured en face and en profil respectively. The sitter is unkown but judging by his tanned skin, plain shirt and leather hat, it is thought that he could have been a contract labourer building the extension of the artist’s house in the Wappen, Antwerp.
